Since 1999 The Arc has partnered with the Milton and Betty Katz Jewish Community Center in Margate to provide an 8-week inclusive summer camp program for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) in conjunction with their Camp By the Sea. Every summer, we are able to send 20 to 24 children with I/DD to camp with the supports they need to have a successful experience with their non-disabled peers.
The goal of the program has been to provide an inclusive camp experience for both children with I/DD and their fellow campers. The Arc's campers are able to learn from and play with a diverse group of children, while non-disabled campers learn to be more compassionate and understanding toward children with I/DD.
The JCC hires additional camp counselors with a background in supporting children with disabilities through funding provided by The Arc. The campers receive the assistance they need to be included in all of the camp activities. The Arc utilizes state funding for the basic services. Grant dollars and donations are used to provide some campers with a one-on-one counselor when necessary.
Campers have had wonderful experiences at camp over the years! Children not only have the opportunity to play, swim, and participate in arts and crafts but they have the opportunity to do so along side typical children.
